Days 6 & 7 Venice

The journey from Lucerne to Venice is long, we are in the coach from early morning to mid afternoon. The countryside however is worth every minute especially as we travel in lovely sunlight through the Swiss valley towards the famous St Gotthard Tunnel. The Swiss farmers are so neat it looks like the countryside straight out of a model railway.

We arrive at our hotel on the outskirts of Venice around 3.30 pm, some members of the group head into the old part of Venice for a gondola ride. We prefer to check on and enjoy the rest of the afternoon making a watercolour sketch each of a local scene. Dinner is served in the hotel, an abundant meal, which is par for the course so far!

Sunday morning and we are off to the obligatory glass blowing demonstration at the Murano Glass factory, then onto the historic centre of Venice where we are left to our own resources for the rest of the day.

We decide to go to Mass at St Marks Basilica which is a most enjoyable, beautiful music and reverent liturgy. Outside it is pouring with rain and we purchase a poncho and Glen produces the umbrella she wisely packed, but this is not enough. For in places, particularly St Marks Square the water has risen to a bout a foot deep! But one can buy disposable long legged galoshes for this occurrence and we both do. Thereafter we slosh our way across St Marks Square to one of the Museums. We spend some time browsing and more time waiting for lunch which doesn't come so we move on in search of a restaurant where there is more action at the tables.

After lunch we stroll through the rain, which is constant but lighter now and through the tourists who are abundant and not getting any lighter. We discover a museum dedicated to Vivaldi and the fabulous Rialto Bridge and gondolas and more gondolas! We return by boat to our bus and back to the hotel for any early night.
